You know you have thin hair when bobby pins slide straight off your head, or you can't get curls to hold for longer than five minutes before falling flat. Not the ideal situation, I know.
But if you have thin hair, you shouldn't feel doomed to a lifetime of wispy-looking locks and lifeless bangs. There are ways to style thin hair to make it look thicker, starting with a good haircut. ICYMI: regular haircuts help your hair grow healthier and fuller. Although it seems like cutting your hair makes it look even thinner, it will make your hair grow fuller. "Consistent trims are not only important for hair growth, but they will also help your hair appear fuller and healthier," says Adriana Tesler, celebrity stylist and owner of Tesler Salon.
Once you've scheduled your hair appointment and get settled into your stylist's chair, explain your concerns about your hair looking thin. Then, "stick with a strong shape and ask for more blunt lines in your haircut," says celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson. The blunt lines give hair more dimension and depth, naturally making it look fuller. After your cut, taking care of your hair is also key to keeping its full look. "Use thickening shampoos and conditioners and then a texturizing styling product that will expand the cuticle and will give the appearance of thicker hair," Gibson explains.
Here, the best haircuts and styles for thin hair—whether you've got short hair like Rihanna, or long hair like Gwyneth or Ashley Graham.

For Medium Hair: Textured Lob
Victoria Beckham's cut adds more volume to her naturally thin hair. "Although every set of hair has its own textures, this cut shows one of best lengths for hair to showcase thickness," Gibson says. Keeping the length at the shoulders or slightly above keeps the hair dimension and makes it look full.

For Short Hair: Natural Textured Bob
Even those with natural and textured hair can experience a lack of volume and thinness. Take note of this hairstyle that Rihanna wears for inspiration for your next cut. But keep this in mind, "for thin hair, the shortest I would go is just above the shoulder," Gibson notes. Ask for a strong shape and more sharp lines in your haircut to add volume.

For Medium to Long Hair: Layers On Layers
Layered and textured waves make the hair look wider, Tesler says, which gives the illusion that you have fuller hair than you do. Ask your stylist to layer your hair so that it gives dimension to your strands. You can then style it with loose waves to add more body.

For Longer Hair: Try a Topknot
Like Grey's Anatomy actress Camilla Luddington, styling your thin hair (no matter the cut) is the trick to making your hair appear fuller. "A high bun gives you an elegant look that elevates the hair, giving the illusion of having more strands and fuller hair," Tesler says.

For Longer Hair: Blunt Ends
"There is no right or wrong when it comes to length for thin hair," Tesler explains. Keep your hair all the same length instead of adding layers. You can maintain your hair by getting trims instead of drastic cuts. This will still encourage your hair to grow thicker without sacrificing the length you currently have.

For Shoulder-Length Hair: Blown-Out Lob
Edie Falco has a shoulder-length cut with straight hair. "A beautiful and simple straight blow-dry can add body to your hair," Tesler adds.

For Short Hair: Cropped Pixie
"While Halsey doesn't necessarily have thin hair, a cropped pixie cut is a great option for those with thinner hair," says celebrity hair stylist Andrew Fitzsimons. "Ask your stylist to cut choppy layers into your cut, which will give the illusion of thicker hair." Fitzsimons adds that this cut is also super low-maintenance and easy to style—you just need a little pomade.

For Short Hair: Pompadour
"An awesome way to disguise thinner hair with a short cut is with a pompadour—just add a bit of thickening mousse to help style this look," says Samantha Sheppard, lead stylist at Glam+Go. Show your stylist reference images and discuss the best cut: depending on your face shape, you may want more or less length on the sides.

For Short Hair: Short Bob
"Even though Cameron Diaz wore this in 2012, it is still very relevant as a modern haircut," says Micki Charles, stylist at The Red Door Salon. "Adding light graduation helps to build weight within the interior of the haircut." Charles suggests asking your stylist for a low-elevation graduated bob, and a face frame if you want to look similar to Cameron's.

For Medium hair: Textured Lob
"If the bob feels too short or dramatic of a look, try a super-layered lob—a.k.a. long bob," suggests Fitzsimons. "Ask your stylist for lots of layers and to leave the length close to your shoulders." Just grab a texturizing spray and you'll be ready to roll.

For Medium hair: Shoulder-Length Blunt Cut
Sheppard loves blunt cuts for those with thinner hair. "The dramatic line of the blunt cut creates a geometric look, which gives the illusion of more thickness," says Sheppard. "At this length, you can still play with updos and braids, as well."

For Medium hair: One-Length Cut
"Emma Stone's look is a classic one-length haircut, which is cut from short to long—aka A-line," explains Charles. "With all your hair meeting at the same perimeter, this allows your locks to be thickest at this length." Charles suggested asking for an A-line, one-length cut a little below the collarbone.

For Long Hair: Super-Layered
"If want to keep your hair's length, ask your stylist to cut in lots of long layers to help create the illusion of volume," says Fitzsimons. "If your hair is thick enough, bangs can also help this look appear thicker and fuller."

For Long Hair: Balayage
"Adding a bit of lighter color to the hair via balayage can make hair appear much fuller and thicker," says Sheppard. "Ask your stylist/colorist for balayage a few levels lighter than your normal color."

For Long Hair: Relaxed and Piecey
"If you like your hair to look perfect, this is not the look for you," admits Charles. "But, if you love that boho vibe, a la Gwyneth, with a piecey, relaxed look, you will feel right at home in this one."
Charles suggests asking your stylist for a one-length, long haircut, and not to layer, as it will make the ends even more sparse. For this look, don't forget to trim every two-and-a-half months, as it's easy to forget maintenance when your locks are long.
